Community Events
Caldmore Area Housing Association is always actively involved in looking at new and imaginative ways in which to engage with the members of the local community. Over the recent years we have been engaging with various sections of the community to put on events that commemorate an important issue, a significant national or international day or to just simply bring people together in celebration and fun. These events have included one off events, as well as regular annual ones.
The areas in which we are operate have multicultural communities, therefore barriers to participation, such as language and cultural sensitivity, can arise. To overcome these barriers we incorporate various forms of art into many of our events. The use of arts such as music, dance or fine arts means that the individuals can participate without feeling inhibited by differences in culture and language.
We involve people of ALL ages, and irrespective of gender, ethnicity and disability. In so doing we enable and encourage participants to interact with sections of the community that they may not usually have regular contact with. This not only brings people from different backgrounds together to work towards a single goal, i.e. the event, but it also helps the participants “informally” develop awareness of other cultures and backgrounds. Thus we make a vital contribution to community cohesion.
In 2003 we organised a community carnival and have continued to host this now event which is the centrepiece of our annual events calendar. Working with local residents community groups and other stakeholders, we have more recently added a Lantern festival, International Dance Day celebrations and an event to mark World Environmental Day. Grant sponsorship comes from various sources Arts Council West Midlands, Walsall MBC, local businesses and individuals.
