Flying the Flag for Caldmore
Caldmore will get seriously colourful next month as residents and traders join forces to fly the flag for their community!
On 3rd October Caldmore Housing is hosting a Banner Festival. The event will involve 30 flags being put up by local traders and businesses around the Green to bring colour to the community.
Local people are also invited to take part in a workshop to design their own banner or flag. Music and refreshments will also be available from 11am to 3pm in the Caldmore Green area.
The event will also launch community consultation on plans for the new ‘Bigger, Better, Brighter’ Caldmore Carnival which will be transformed into a 3-day Bank Holiday Festival held in May 2010.
The finished flags will be used to decorate the area at the May Festival and other community events.
Local people and traders will also be invited to pledge their support for the May Festival and ‘fly the flag’ for Caldmore. Since 2003, Caldmore Housing has successfully organised an annual community carnival in the autumn.
The responsibility for this has now been passed to a steering group which is comprised of local residents, traders, voluntary organisations and a representative from Caldmore Housing. The steering group moved the carnival date to May, when the weather is better and avoiding clashes with important religious festivals.
Caldmore Chief Executive, Mike Hew, said: “Caldmore is a unique and special place that has a lot to celebrate and I really hope this project will help people to appreciate that fact.
“The banners should make a big visual impact and we hope the workshop events will lead us into our best ever carnival in May 2010.
“We felt it was important this year to hold a community event in the autumn as we have always done – and what better way to do this than launch the consultation for the May Festival?
“I also want to thank Flags and Flagpoles and Fabrics n' Stuff for their help and support for the Banner Festival.”
